About Us

A Family Legacy of Compassionate Care

Woodlands, first home in the group, was established in 1976. Gillian Lee first started to look after her Grandmother, when she was unable to find alternative suitable residential accommodation for her.

As that proved to be a success Gill, a trained Nurse, decided to take in more residents. She had an extension built to her home and the rest, as they say, is history. Hill Brow was purpose designed and built in 1986.

Alison, Gill’s daughter, also trained as a Nurse and holds a degree in Nursing from City University / St Barts Hospital, London with a Diploma in Elderly Care. She left the NHS as Ward Manager of an elderly care unit at The Royal Free Hospital when she assumed control of both homes, following her mother’s retirement in 1998.

Meet the Lee family who have specialised in elderly care for over 50 years

The family’s commitment for over 50 years, has been to provide the very best care for the elderly, whatever their needs. This has been reinforced by achieving Excellent status in numerous CQC inspections and Environmental Health inspections.

Alison’s family are involved in the homes’ activities. So, we may be looking forward to a third generation of the family to lead the way! Alison’s daughter Anna has been working in the homes for the last 5 years.

We are members of both the Hampshire Care Association and Registered Nursing Homes Association, enabling us to have access to and support these valuable bodies. And, where we can share the best practice with other homes.

Hill House opened in August 2011, followed by Farnham Mill in June 2018. Both are state of the art purpose-built nursing and dementia homes. We can offer the highest level of care with the best facilities in a comfortable and homely environment.

Hill House is currently rated Outstanding for Care and Good overall in its last CQC inspection.

Ethos

Happy Place to Live & Work

Hill House designed to bring new standards of comfort and specialist care in Hampshire. Every feature and element of its design and ethos has been thought through to offer both a luxurious and stimulating environment.

It’s the Lee’s family belief that a nursing home is only as good as the staff who work there. At Farnham Mill we employ a significantly higher staff to resident ratio, meaning our staffing levels are amongst the best in the care sector. Every member of our staff shares our Sunflower Approach to care:

  • Loyalty
  • Adoration
  • Longevity

This is our unique, person-centred care ethos designed to deliver compassionate care for every resident’s needs and preferences. Our residents are cared for as if they were our own family, always putting the residents care, respect and dignity above all else.

With over 50 years experience, knowledge and trusted reputation, we employ the best nurses, carers, and staff. We invest in the training and development of our team and are proud to pay above the Living Wage, reflected in our staff loyalty and longevity. These values are one of the reasons we are a happy place to work and live in here.

Careers and staff

At Hill House nursing home, we firmly believe that a nursing home is only as good as the staff who work there. So, great care has been taken in recruiting highly trained, professional, caring and compassionate staff. We do not employ temporary or agency staff, as we know it is as important for the residents to know who is looking after them. Importantly, it is essential for staff to know and understand residents’ needs.

We have lead nursing and care staff who specialise in different areas of care such as; palliative, dementia, infection control, nutrition and other areas. The ratio of staff to residents is above recommended ratios. Also, residents are involved in the choice of staff from the outset, as we have a resident on the interview panel.

New staff start with induction training when they first arrive. And they are supported in their training from a care certificate up to degree level in all areas relating to the running of the home. We do not use agency staff and everybody in the home is paid well above the national living wage.

In 2018 we won the Inspire Family Business of the Year for Hampshire Award, for the way we have developed and promoted our staff within the homes. In 2013 we were awarded Investors in People Gold Award. This award recognises our commitment to our staff, their training and development. In November 2011, we won the Hampshire Inspire Employer of the Year Award, our homes were recognised for the development and welfare of our staff. In addition to these awards, we have been national finalists for numerous care awards which is a testament to our fantastic team.

Charities

In 2011 friends of Woodlands and Hill Brow set up a charity. This charity is called Families Supporting Care, its aim is to help elderly people in different ways. Where possible, it will help support residents whose funds diminish during their stay. As well as supporting the local Alzheimer Café and the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.

Over the last 10 years the charity has helped over 60 residents stay in their chosen care home. Funds are raised through a number of regular social events held throughout the year, in the 4 different homes. In addition to this, the Lee family and a number of relatives have donated to and supported the charity.

The Trustees all have a close connection with the homes. It is the Trustees who decide how the funds are allocated. If you would like to know more about the charity, please talk to one of the Hill House nursing home managers or if you would like to help, please contact the charity secretary Helen Gould on helengould@hotmail.co.uk.
