The policy of this home is to provide and maintain as far as is reasonably practicable, safe and healthy working conditions, equipment, systems of work and procedures for all employees.  To provide such information and training to staff as they need for the purpose of carrying out their duties.  This policy document forms part of your contract of employment as each employee must work to the producers laid down within it.

            INTENT

                 The proprietor recognises and accepts responsibility as an employer for carrying out the business in a manner which will not, as far as is reasonably practicable, give rise to any undue risk to the health and safety of any employee and other persons within the home.

 

                 In order to achieve this goal it is the responsibility of EVERY EMPLOYEE to report immediately any breakdowns, defects, malfunctions, hazards and faults etc., both verbally and in writing.  ALL STAFF must be constantly aware of safety hazards, area’s of potential danger and must never take unnecessary risks. Be alert to possible causes of accidents. Appreciate the importance of reporting any faults in machinery or equipment. Handle electrical equipment carefully and report any faults in wiring, plugs and fuses. Understand that any accidents (however minor) must be reported immediately. All reports of breakdown and faults should be written in the diary and odd job book.

 

                 STAFF MUST NOT ATTEMPT TO EFFECT ANY REPAIRS TO MACHINERY OR EQUIPMENT.

 

    l            ELECTRICAL

                               This home has been completely rewired and an electrical test has been carried out by professionals.

    l            Should a fuse ‘blow’ it will be replaced by or on the instructions of the proprietor/manager.

    l            Lighting sockets must not be left empty.

    l            When not in use, all electrical equipment must be switched off at the socket and the plug removed.

    l            DON’T FORGET THE TELEVISIONS

  • Legionellas Disease – Refer to Legionella File kept in the office.
  • CENTRAL HEATINGThe central heating boilers and systems are regularly serviced and maintained by professionals. The central heating boilers and timers are not to be tampered with. If adjustment is necessary consult the proprietor/ manager or handyman.

                                    You must use the first aid usage form when items are used so that replacements can be made.                                           

        l            THE ACCIDENT RECORD BOOK is kept in the office.

                                   All accidents must be reported in detail in this book, it must be filled in at the time of the accident by the member of staff involved. Follow the written instructions found within the book, together with the homes accident policy.

                                   Ensure that you know where the main supplies of gas , water and electricity are and how to turn them off in an emergency.

                                   Special instructions are given and can be found in the Policy Folder

                                                                           

        l            FLOOR CLEANING EQUIPMENT

                                   Carry out regular checks of plugs and cables on all electrical floor cleaning equipment. Always check that the dust bags and hoses are not blocked in the Hoover. Never leave the equipment plugged in and untended. (Always take good care of the trailing cable, as it can easily be tripped over.

                                   Take special care with wet floors.

                                   Spillage’s on floors etc. must be mopped up and wiped up immediately and dried thoroughly. If a spillage is on a carpet or furniture, immediate action should be taken to prevent soiling and staining.  If still wet then hazard sign must be placed on the floor.

                                   Always use the correct cleaning products for the job and for the machine.

                                   Work to the standards laid down in the risk assessment on hazardous substances which is found in the COSHH file in the office.

        l            GENERAL POINTS

                                   A tray must be used to carry several items, Do not carry too many things at once.

                                   Broken crockery or glass must be wrapped in paper before disposal. Do not leave it where it may have to be re-handled or become a danger to others.

                                   ALWAYS THINK OF THE REFUSE COLLECTORS           

                     l            LAUNDRY SAFETY NOTES

                                   Use the machinery correctly and do not overload.  

        l            DETERGENTS AND OTHER DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES.

                                   Always use correct amount of detergent and don’t guess.  Pay particular attention to all warning notices printed on the bottles or packets. Prolonged exposure to skin of certain cleaning agents may result in skin trouble.

                                   Suitable protective clothing will be provided by the employer. Make sure that you protect yourself.

        l            DRYER. 

                                   Always keep the filters clean on the tumble dryer and never overload the dryer. Use the correct heat and time settings, do not over dry items.

        l            WASHING MACHINE .

                                   Never overload the washing machine.  It can be dangerous and will not do an efficient job. Always sort your load first and pre-soak heavily soiled items separately from the main wash.  Select the correct water temperature and load settings.  Dissolvable red bags must be used for soiled items.

                                   The washing machine must be put on a 90° cycle weekly to clean it.

        l            CLINICAL WASTE. 

                                        The home has a policy on clinical waste – read and abide by it                     

        l            NOTES ON THE SAFE USE OF LADDERS AND STEP LADDERS

                                   Staff must not climb on the furniture or equipment in order to reach windows, Light fittings etc. always use a stepladder. If employees have to use a ladder for any reason, they should ensure that they use one which is suitable for the purpose and that it is free from obvious defect.  If in doubt DO NOT USE IT.

                                   THE FOLLOWING POINTS SHOULD BE NOTED:

                                   1.  A general rule is that ladders should be one foot out for every four foot rise.

                                   2.  Ladders should always rest on a firm and level base.

                                   3.  If a ladder is to be leaned against anything, it must be secured either at the top or at its base. Using ladders is a 2 person minimum task.

                                   4.  Never try to over reach from a ladder instead always move the ladder.

                                   5.  Never suspend any unnecessary weighty object from a ladder.

        l            KITCHEN

                                   THE COOKER must be kept clean.

                                   OVEN DOORS  must be opened with care so as to avoid the initial outburst of hot air and fumes and avoid burning the arms. Do not stand directly in front of  the oven door when opening it. The doors must not be left open once the oven is lit.

                                   THE BURNERS must be turned off when not in use. When in use make sure that they are properly ignited. Saucepan handles must not be allowed to protrude over the front edge of the cooker or over an open flame.

        l            SINKS IN KITCHEN AND UTILITY ROOMS

                                   SINKS  must be kept clean and tidy and blockages reported.  DO NOT put hot fat /oil or other items through the system that could cause it to block.

                                                                WARNING

                                   Never handle electrical appliances with wet hands. Never allow water to come in contact with an electrical component.

        l            REFRIGERATOR AND FREEZERS

                                   The fridge and freezers should be kept clean inside and out. Make sure the doors/lids are firmly closed to insure correct temperatures are maintained. Take and record temperature readings on a daily basis. Please also note the food risk analyses policy.                                                      

        l            FOOD

                 When dealing with food, appropriate protective clothing must be worn, e.g. hats and aprons.  Food must be labelled, packaged and stored properly and rotated by use by dates. 

    l            WORK SURFACES 

                               No bags or jumpers to be left on work surfaces in the kitchen – they should be kept clean and clear of clutter. Always use the correct coloured food boards for preparation of food.

    l            BAKING DISHES 

                               Must be removed from the oven and placed on a heat resistant surface prior to stirring or adjustment of Contents.

    l            KNIVES 

                               Always select the correct size and type of knife for the job to be undertaken. 

                                    Never leave knives in the sink.

                                    Clean them and put them away.

                                    Always lay them flat when not in use.

                                    Never attempt to catch a dropped knife.

                 Sharp (professional) knives are kept in a locked protected pouch that only certain members of staff have access to.

    l            OTHER POINTS

                                    DO NOT RUN, ALWAYS WALK

                 Cleanliness is essential and staff must wash their hands after using the toilet and always before handling food.

                               Whilst on duty the staff dress must be uniform only. It must be kept clean, in good condition and worn in a smart manner.

                               Shoes should be flat lace up for good support and kept clean.

                               Protective clothing must be used.

    l            DRUGS CUPBOARD/CABINET  

                               The storage of drugs and medicines must always be kept locked in the drugs cupboard/cabinet and when not in use the key should be kept by a senior member of staff on duty.

                               Always follow the homes rules regarding the administration of drugs and        medicines. See the homes drugs policy

                               Always work on the advice from the chemist regarding storage and /or disposal of unused drugs. The chemist for this home is:

    l            MOVING AND HANDLING                                      

                               The employer/manager will provide a hoist when it has been assessed as being appropriate.  Instruction and training on safe moving/handling and carrying of persons or heavy objects will also be given.

                               Nearly a quarter of accidents are caused by people incorrectly moving and handling heavy objects or people. Training will be given and staff must attend training sessions.

                               THERE ARE TWO WAYS OF MOVING AND HANDLING the RIGHT way and the WRONG way. USE THE RIGHT WAY. See the homes Policy on Moving and Handling.

                               ABIDE BY ALL POLICIES

 

                               REPORT ANY HAZARDS AND RISKS THAT YOU COME ACROSS.

                                   

l  WHEELCHAIRS

 

Wheelchairs must always be used in the correct manner.  All wheelchairs are provided with foot rests and these must be used at all times.  If they are taken off for any reason when not in use, they must be replaced straight away.  Before using them follow guidelines and Risk Assessments.
