Hill House Activities in November

November’s theme was ‘Fireworks and Sparkles!’ with our annual firework display which took place on Thursday 5th November.

Wednesday 4th November – Singing for the Brain
Residents from all 3 homes, as well as the Day Care Centre, enjoyed singing and moving to Barbara in the ‘Singing for the brain’ monthly session. Afterwards residents enjoyed tea and cake.

Thursday 5th November – Annual Firework Display
Hill House residents enjoyed hotdogs for supper that evening, followed by watching the annual firework display. Positioned with a good view in front of windows they thoroughly enjoyed the 45 minute colourful and sparkly display. There were some lovely Roman candles, and whirring catherine wheels; the display culminating with some very impressive rockets which left things outside very smoky indeed!

Friday 6th November – Tweseldown Pub Trip
Eight residents enjoyed a trip to the Tweseldown pub that morning, where they met up with residents from both Hillbrow and Woodlands homes. Alison popped in to share a drink and chat with them too. The large group enjoyed wine, sherry, and beer as well as tea and coffee and also enjoyed a good chat, laugh and reminisce with each other.

Tuesday 10th November –‘All about Chocolate!’
In celebration of National Chocolate Day, residents enjoyed a chocolate themed afternoon following lunch during which chocolate sponge with chocolate custard was served.
Residents learnt some interesting facts about chocolate and tasted such delights as milk chocolate with sea salt, white chocolate and even chocolate with chilli! This was followed by learning about a little of the history of the world re-known British Cadbury’s brand. Afterwards residents and even some of their relatives commented on how informative and tasty the session was!

Wednesday 11th November – Armistice day
Armistice Day commemorated every year on November 11th to mark the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France, marks the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I. It takes place every year at eleven o’clock in the morning— at the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918.
Hill House marked this occasion with a ceremonious banging of a gong to signal the 2 minute silence, after which some appropriate war poetry was read and residents reminisced about the war before having their lunch.
During the afternoon the tempo was upped and residents enjoyed an upbeat tea party sing-a-long with some old wartime favorites.

Friday 13th November – Monthly Church Service
Residents enjoyed Vicar Tara’s monthly visit and church service with some uplifting hymns as well as a pleasant chat with tea and biscuits, afterwards.

Friday 20th November – ‘Singing For Fun’
Residents enjoyed singing in the afternoon from a lively group known as ‘Singing For Fun’ There were 18 singers including a cellist and someone playing the electric organ. Everyone very much enjoyed the musical performance and tea was served afterwards.

Friday 27th November – Redfields Garden Centre Trip and ‘Carillon Singers’ Concert
During the morning a group of residents enjoyed a trip to Redfields Garden Centre, Church Crookham. They enjoyed seeing the gifts and Christmas decoration displays before having tea and mince pies in the restaurant.

The Carillon Singers performed for us in the evening, launching our Christmas program of events in style! Residents enjoyed the 30 strong professional choir of ladies and gentlemen singing in unison to well-known tunes, all dressed in their vibrant blue outfits with the Christmas tree in the background.There was a warm, friendly atmosphere and all residents, their guests and the choir soon got into the Christmas spirit even though it wasn’t yet December!

Monday 30th November – ‘Robert May’s Tea Dance
A group of residents attended the annual Christmas tea dance at Robert May’s School in Odiham. A delicious tea was served including seasonal mincepies and sherry, whilst some very talented young choristers sang for the guests. The residents were lucky and all won lovely prizes in the Christmas raffle which was drawn later in the afternoon and there was dancing to old time music and Christmas favourites to finish.
