‘Spring has Sprung’ in March at Hill House and our residents had a lovely time throughout the month. Here there are some of the special events that our residents enjoyed:

A Very Special Mothers’ Day!
On Sunday 11th March residents and their families celebrated Mother’s Day. It was a very pleasant afternoon with tea and a beautiful homemade celebratory cake, as well as our lovely Louis playing some beautiful tunes on the piano for all the Mums, Grandmothers and Great Grandmothers to enjoy. Additionally, some touching Mother’s Day poems and a prayer were read by residents’ relatives which were much appreciated and made it an extra special occasion as we remembered the love and support all the Mothers in our lives have given us all.

The ‘First Day of Spring!’
On the afternoon of Wednesday 21st March residents celebrated the first day of Spring with some seasonal planting. Residents admired the very colourful and cheerful primula and narcissi, before helping plant them out into two large tubs with small decorative trees as centrepieces. On resident suggested splitting the narcissi bulbs for added effect and this was done with good result. Whilst the planting continued residents learnt some facts about Spring and its origins as well as recalling an identifying correctly many Spring flowers during the discussion. Once finished the colourful floral tubs were positioned in good view so residents from both sides of the home could see and enjoy them without having to go outside.

Sensory Session – ‘Follow Your Nose!’
On the afternoon of Friday 23rd March residents and day care attendees came together in the Main Lounge for a ‘Sensory Follow Your Nose’ session. This tested the ability to recognise 15 food and non-food items just by using the sense of smell. Everything from stilton cheese, to curry powder and beeswax polish were sniffed and people’s ideas of individual items recorded. Those that correctly guessed won chocolate prizes. Whilst sniffing and guessing residents learnt about the nose and our sense of smell generally, as well as the Turkish man who currently has the world’s longest nose! After the event residents and their relatives said how much they had enjoyed the session and looked forward to doing it again in the future with a different set of items to recognise by smell!

In my Easter Bonnet with all the Flowers on it!’
On ‘Good Friday’ morning Friday 30th March in celebration of Easter, residents donned their Easter bonnets for the annual Easter bonnet parade and competition. Residents from across the home met in the Main lounge wearing their amazing and colourful creations that they had worked hard on earlier in the week during Easter bonnet arts and crafts sessions. Alison the proprietor met with residents and admired their handiwork. It was difficult to choose an overall winner so in the end everyone wearing a hat was declared a winner and chocolate hearts as prizes were duly awarded. Chocolate Easter eggs were also distributed to everyone and residents enjoyed these along with tea and coffee during the morning.
