Icons of sport at Hill House
This week residents at Hill house have enjoyed the start of the world cup along with all the sporting
themed games and activities.
Monday marked National Gingerbread Day; we were thrilled to make mini footballer gingerbread men in
our cooking club.
Cooking and baking are fully immersive experiences which engage all the senses. It’s a very tactile activity,
which allows them to experience different textures and sensations. It also gets them moving and can
improve hand-eye coordination through stirring, kneading dough, and other movements.
Our knitting club gathered on the first gardenview lounge, we have started to knit scarves and throws for the
sensory dolls in the lounge.
Others in gardenview played dominoes and completes jigsaw puzzles while listening to there favourite
songs.
That afternoon we couldn’t wait to watch England’s opening game in the world cup against Iran.
Our fabulous activities team hosted a world cup party in the day lounge with a fully stocked bar and halftime snacks. We gathered to watch England Win 6-1 on the giant projector screen. After the game ended,
we all sung Sweet Caroline with a drink or two.
Before the game our gardenview lounges handmade flags and decorations ready for the world cup.
Tuesday as part of Sports week, we loved playing football goal kick as part of daily chair exercises.
Chair exercises are an excellent way to build strength and improve flexibility without putting too much
strain on your body. Chair exercises also improve senior mobility by increasing blood flow and lubricating
your joints.
Balloon bounce is a fun game we play as part of regular chair-based exercise. We love how it encourages
everyone to join in. Chair exercises are an excellent way to build strength and improve flexibility without
putting too much strain on your body.
Wednesday morning, we were delighted to see our four-legged friend Pebbles. Spending time with animals
especially dogs, boost self-esteem and confidence. Visits from an animal can be an energetic experience or
an exciting part of a person’s day.
After we took on a great winter sport of curling, in the day lounge.
Our gardenview lounges we spent time playing group floor darts.
Others loved spending time reminiscing with photos and memories.
We didn’t realise we were making memories and beautiful friendships at Hill House; we just knew we were having fun.
We were delighted to attend Fleet Christmas festival with our friends from Hillbrow. We took in all the
magic of Christmas, as we wondered around the stalls before stopping for coffee and a good catch up.
We know that there are significant benefits for people living in care homes and for those in the community when engaging together, such as increased wellbeing and a sense of being part of the local area.
Others took on a sports themed quiz in the day lounge.
Thursday morning, we spent time at the hairdressers as well as playing a sporting famous faces game.
Our gardenview lounge we spent time reminiscing on family history and learning so much about our
history.
Bananagram is a fantastic game that improves overall memory and helps with word recollection overtime.
These gentlemen spent this morning challenging their brains while having fun and engaging in
conversation with one and other.
Busy time as we stamped gift bags ready for Christmas as part of Arts & Crafts.
Research has shown that crafting, regardless of the medium you use, bolsters mood, improves self-confidence, and reduces stress overall. In addition, crafting has also shown to improve mental agility,
improves both gross and fine motor movements, and decrease cognitive decline.
That afternoon we arranged our weekly flower delivery in the day lounge.
Friday morning, a game of basketball was enjoyed in the day lounge. Sports week sparked lots of
conversation as we spoke of sports we played at school or as adults as part of a team.
Our gentlemen watched the Wales vs Iran game in the world cup together with a cup of coffee.
Friday afternoon we were delighted to have Raye singing for us and his fabulous voice got everyone
dancing and singing along.
Saturday morning, continuing with our Icons of Sports Week theme, we spent the morning making sports
T-shirts for the arts and craft session using crepe paper.
This art brought out our creative sides with cutting, tearing, crinkling, and layering of colourful papers.
We all love our papers on a Sunday morning, just catching up with what is happening around us.
