Throughout the week, residents have occupied themselves with all things “Movie” related, from a fun themed afternoon tea party with the Queen of Hearts, movie quizzes, wild west shooting target games to The Oscars interactive afternoon. There has been lots of enjoyment and walks out and about in the summer sunshine, we have loved having lots of our family and friends visiting.
Monday morning, our garden view lounges reminisced animated film characters, we played a game of picture match, sparking lots of memories and conversations about the films each had starred in.
In our day lounge, arts and crafts club gathered to make Hollywood star inspired crafts.
Others engaged with their friends in board games like ludo.
That afternoon, we took on a movie picture quiz, followed by a James Bond quiz. It is amazing to hear how iconic the James Bond films are and how we relate those films to memories from our life. “My son was born the year that came out”.
We also spent time out on the patio soaking up the gorgeous sunshine.
Tuesday, we celebrated James Bond, starting with casino games in our garden view lounges, we took turns hosting the roulette table and placing our bets.
All for a bit of fun! we won chocolates and cake. Activities of daily living take place throughout the day in our garden view lounges, we love to help out when we can, laying the table, rearranging the books and having a general sort out keeps us busy and promotes our independence.
The James Bond theme continued in our day lounge with a Cocktail master class, shaken and not stirred for our martinis! We enjoyed measuring out our spirits and mixers before making our unique mix of cocktail.
Our Woodlands and Hillbrow Dementia choir gathered at Hill House for our choir practice, this week we added musical instruments alongside our most popular songs to sing. We played and sung along with our friends from the other 3 homes that form Woodlands and Hillbrow.
With a new fun take on classic nursery rhymes we laughed a lot.
Our Choir practice always ends with a tea and coffee social, this is the perfect opportunity for new friends to catch up, it has been amazing to see such beautiful friendships forming through the choir.
We challenged ourselves with word games that afternoon in our garden view lounge we spent time making words from scrabble tiles, this is great for our brain health.
We also loved our pamper session with manicures and having our nails painted, while listening to songs from the silver screen.
Our James Bond casino rolled around to the rest of the home that afternoon.
Wednesday morning, we took on brain training math puzzles, by completing brain exercises regularly such as memory tasks and number puzzles, there are improvements to mental health in areas of memory, reasoning, and information processing.
Our flower arranging club gathered to create stunning floral displays for their home, as well as red and white rose displays ahead of our themed tea party that afternoon.
Our cooking club inspired by the days theme of “Alice in Wonderland”, we rolled up our sleeves and put on our aprons to make Queen of Hearts Jam Tarts.
We rolled out the dough and shaped it before filling with lashings of jam and topped them off with heart shaped pastry lids.
‘Let’s all congratulate us with another cup of tea a very merry un-birthday to you’.
Movie week continues our garden view lounge received an invite to the Queen of Hearts Tea Party with guest of honour herself.
What a fabulous afternoon as we celebrated everybody’s un-birthday with lashings of tea and coffee and scrumptious cakes and the Jam tarts!
The film Alice in Wonderland is well known for its crazy game of croquet, it was our turn to play the crazy game we whacked the ball through the hoops seeing how far we could get it.
Thursday was wild west film day, we started our day arranging the stunning flower delivery into vases for the home displays and centre pieces.
We were due to play western beer bottle toss, but conversation had turned to sports days and we saw pictures of our grandbabies taking part in sport days, we joked about taking on our very own egg and spoon race, and before you knew it we were racing around our indoor track trying to beat our friends in our very own egg and spoon race.
Eggs then turned into balloon and spoon race as we agreed the egg and spoon race was too easy, with a lot of bending the rules the final race was on and one balloon was flying everywhere, but one stayed perfectly on the spoon until the end, when we realised how this had been done everyone laughed so much.
Our wild west games took place in our garden view lounges with a shooting target game, as well as a line dance sing-a-long and dance along.
That afternoon we were delighted to welcome Will, for an afternoon of Dean Martin and Movie songs.
Music can provoke memories from the past and help boost verbal memory. In addition to improving memory, music can improve one’s quality of sleep, diminish pain, increase mobility and improve cognitive skills.
Friday morning across the home we had a lovely coffee and games morning with hot drinks, cakes and a variety of board games on offer.
Our new favourite board game ‘BEFUDDLED BEMUSED & BEWILDERED’ was out and being played in the day lounge with a twist on “trivia questions, charades and can you name game”, it is inclusive and highly amusing for those playing and those watching on.
We also love a game of Bananagram, either played independently or as a one-to-one activity.
We were welcomed to the Oscar’s interactive Tea Party with a glass of champagne and friendly chit-chat, we watched a video on the history of the Oscars and then iconic video clips from the awards over the years.
The drinks flowed, the cakes were scrumptious, and conversation was a plenty.
‘Such a wonderful afternoon’ said one resident,
‘a true delight and such great memories, I remember watching that when it happened’
Saturday morning, we assembled to take on this month’s giant group crossword puzzle.
Working together to answer the cryptic clues, we had a lot of fun with some of the really tricky questions.
That afternoon we settled down for our movie afternoon, we chose to watch the FA cup final!
Our interactive snack cart rolled around the home bursting with popcorn and ice lollies for everyone to enjoy.
