This week Hill House have taken on many challenges as they celebrated game shows across the home from ‘The price is right’ to ‘Bullseye’ the games sparked many memories of who we used to watch the game shows with, and even appearing on the game shows ourselves.
Monday, we enjoyed a group game of skittles in the day lounge, skittles is a fun game that promotes benefits from the social aspect and the light physical movement. Bowling is a game that we have enjoyed in our youth so playing encourages reminiscing of days gone by.
That afternoon we gathered for a picture quiz of “Name the TV game show host,” this sparked many conversations about the TV shows themselves.
Gardenview, in the lounge we kicked off our ‘Game Show Week’ with a nostalgic game based on the iconic TV show ‘Bullseye’. The game show was hosted by Jim Bowen and Tony Green from 1981, it is a combination of darts and general knowledge. A Perfect Bullseye score was what all our residents chased and worked as a team to answer the trivia questions.
Tuesday, we started our day with Goat Therapy, our friends trotted around the lounge greeting us. We love all our pet therapy visits but the Goats have a special place in our hearts.
Animals help humans reduce stress. Studies show that interactions with therapy animals can decrease stress in humans. Playing with or petting an animal can increase levels of the stress–reducing hormone oxytocin and decrease production of the stress hormone cortisol (immunosuppressant associated with stress). All of which are very essential to optimum human health.
That afternoon, our fantastic pig racing game was back! We bet on which pig would cross the finishing line, the lounge was a buzz with cheering and squeaking from the pigs as they raced across the board.
That evening we were serenaded by Biju and his fantastic guitar playing.
Others spent time playing game show themed games on the iPad, inspired by the TV show Lingo, we took on Wordle. This game spurs the mind into working differently to usual and this helps improve our overall cognition.
Wednesday morning, Rev Tara visited to host our monthly service in the day lounge.
With our guest star on piano, we love listening to her play and it’s amazing to see her help host the monthly service.
That afternoon we welcomed Natalia, for an afternoon of singing and dancing, bringing the whole home together for this special occasion.
Thursday morning started with a fabulous game of Family Fortunes in one of our gardenview lounges.
In the other lounge we played, Play your cards right, a game of chance and guess work, the buzzer sound made us all chuckle when we got it wrong.
The day lounge arranged the weekly flower delivery as part of our forestry club, it’s a great activity that brings us all together.
Flower arranging is a great activity especially for those living well with dementia. It engages the senses, provides cognitive and sensory stimulation, improves motor skills, and instils a sense of independence and accomplishment.
Hill House were delighted to host the ‘Inter Home Quiz’ afternoon today, with residents from all four-homes competing to be crowned winner. We competed in 4 rounds of questions: round 1 food, round 2 music, round 3 pictures and round 4 the connection round.
It was amazing to see everyone come together and test their knowledge. Congratulations and thankyou to everyone who came and took part and to Farnham Mill who were crowned Quiz Winners.
Friday morning we worked on sharpening our brains with today’s Crossword Games.
Aside from reducing stress, playing crossword games also boosts nostalgia among elders.
Others took part in a name the TV show host picture quiz, exercising the mind to keep it active is as important as maintaining physical fitness and strength as we age.
Our day lounge, we played target Bulls eye using the interactive Omi systems digital target
Followed by a sensory digital painting activity revealing the hidden objects.
That afternoon, our seated exercise activity finished with a game of basketball in our gardenview lounge, we enjoy the giant floor games.
We took part in a trivia quiz in the day lounge, multiple choice questions provide the opportunity for everyone to take part with such a wide variety of subjects there is always something we know.
Saturday morning, our water colour greeting card crafts are still enjoyed by many, they create stunning cards. We loved spending the morning relaxing, painting and listening to classical music.
Santa’s helpers were out in force throughout the morning, we were busy painting a not-so-secret project for the festive season, this sparked conversations about Christmas carols leading to a beautiful rendition of silent night as they painted.
Sunday we enjoyed the company of Florence as she takes part in her Duke of Edinburgh training and is volunteering at Hill House, we played scrabble and challenged ourselves to a new jigsaw puzzle.
