1920’s Week
This week we went back in time one hundred years to celebrate an iconic era: the 1920s. Our residents enjoyed a variety of themed activities from casino games to fashionable crafting. In addition, some of our residents went on a very special outing to the coast, where they explored Southsea Pier and enjoyed a delicious fish and chip lunch by the coast.
On Monday, we kicked the week off with some arts and crafts. We glued feathers and gems to a base to make some beautiful 1920’s headbands.
Meanwhile, in the garden view lounge, we spent the morning playing board games. We played cards, and three-sided dominoes.
In the afternoon, we had a Great Gatsby cocktail party. We mixed and matched the ingredients from the cocktail bar to come up with our own creations, and we made some delicious drinks.
On Tuesday morning, we baked a pineapple upside-down cake with the help of Chef Steve. We mixed all the ingredients together, then carefully placed the pineapple at the bottom of the tin. Once the pineapple was in place we poured in the batter.
In the afternoon, we all came together for a very special tea party, where we said goodbye to one of our activity coordinators, Bryony. While it was emotional to say our farewells, we are very grateful for everything she’s done for us in the last five years.
On Wednesday morning, we tried our luck with some classic casino games. While the roulette wheel gave us the thrill of dumb luck, blackjack allowed to be strategic in our betting.
In the afternoon in the main lounge, the knit and natter club was in full swing. We love this social crafting time, as it allows us to practice an old skill while catching up with our friends.
Meanwhile, in the garden view lounge, we were playing the dynamic board game Kerplunk. We took turns to pull the sticks out of the contraption and tried not to free any of the marbles from the central pool.
On Thursday morning, we participated in one of our favourite activities: flower arranging! We love the variety of flowers, and each week there’s something new! As usual, Louise was there to answer any questions we had about the plants, and to help distribute the flowers.
In the afternoon, we all came together to attend a performance by Jimmy Kent. He sang emotional songs, dancing songs, and sing-along songs. He got us involved in the show by serenading us individually, dancing with us, and sometimes giving us the microphone!
On Friday, some of us went out for the day to visit the Pier in Southsea. We explored the pier, admired the ocean, and enjoyed a delicious fish and chip lunch. It was wonderful to feel the sea air on our faces, and to listen to the ocean waves on the beach below us.
Meanwhile, the cooking club in the main lounge was hard at work baking a beautiful pineapple upside down cake.
On Saturday, we celebrated a very special birthday, as one of us turned one hundred years old. We watched as she opened her letter from the King, then enjoyed a lovely celebratory tea party.
On Sunday, those of us who wanted to participate in a digital church service, live-streamed to our television from a local church.
Meanwhile, in the garden view lounge, we participated in a dementia-friendly service. This consisted primarily of hymns and other religious music, with a couple of bible readings in between. We like to sing along to the music, and often get up and dance.
In the afternoon, some of us got lovely manicures while others opted to take walks in the garden.
